Peter McKnight gives an interesting analysis of the distorted way in which media reports crime in today's Vancouver Sun: Through the Mirror Darkly. Some of his points are that violent or sexual crimes are more likely to reported upon than the hugely more prevalent property crimes. White well-to-do male or female offenders are more likely to make the news despite the reality that the majority of offenders are low-income young males, and even though about 90% of homicides are committed by someone who is known to the victim, crimes by persons unknown are the ones that are well covered thus creating an inapproriate concern for "stranger danger."
